Heroic masculinity has been displayed on a variety of different platforms such as books, movies, and tv shows. According to Arthur, Jeffery Hemmer, heroic masculinity means “harnessing the natural power a man possesses and using it for the good of others around him. The essence of masculinity is not rugged individualism. It is sacrificial giving” (Hemmer). Heroic masculinity is the complete opposite of toxic masculinity, as it gives masculinity a new definition. It redirects the negative connotation of harsh and unruly to strong and courageous. Heroic masculinity possesses hero-like qualities as they are admired for their accomplishments and journey to achieve their goals. In their journey, they are selfless and kind as they navigate through different trials and tribulations. For instance, in the second purge movie, The Purge: Anarchy, Sergeant saved a mother and her daughter from being captured and killed, as he had his own agenda to purge himself. Though his hidden agenda was impure, he still took it upon himself to save people unrelated to him out of kindness and sympathy. He then took two more people under his wing, unintentionally, to survive the remainder of the night. Sergeant displayed heroic masculinity as he protected and defended people who he did not know initially. He showed compassion and empathy as he directed these people toward safety first, putting himself and his original plans on hold temporarily. These qualities are what are considered heroic masculinity. Men can posses a tough exterior with also putting others before him or to make decision for the greater of others around them.
